Ibrahim subdues Indian opposition for gold

Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim of Malaysia overcame resistance from a pair of Indians to win the men's 56-kilogram weightlifting gold medal today at the Commonwealth Games.

Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim of Malaysia overcame resistance from a pair of Indians to win the men's 56-kilogram weightlifting gold medal on Monday at the Commonwealth Games. Ibrahim lifted an aggregate of 257 kilograms as Sukhen Dey and V Srinivas Rao attempted to keep the contest alive with their last chances in clean and jerk.

Dey won silver at 252 kg and Rao took the bronze at 248 kg. Earlier in the day, India also won silver and bronze after Augustina Nwaokolo of Nigeria claimed the first gold medal of the games in the women's 48 kg category. Sonia Chanu was second and Indian teammate Sandhya Rani was third.
