IIT student might have been unhappy with course

The first-year student of Chemical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D), Dinesh Ahlawat, who allegedly committed suicide on Thursday evening, may have taken the extreme step as he was not happy with the course he was studying.

“According to Ahlawat’s friends, he did not want to study chemical engineering and was unhappy with the relatively low rank he had achieved in the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination,” said a senior police official.

But the administration maintained that Ahlawat was a good student. “He was a confident boy, comfortable with his surroundings. He was active in class and was a keen student,” said Rajesh Sharma, registrar, IIT-D. Students who lived in Ahlawat’s hostel say he was a normal youngster and did not seem sad or disturbed. They, however, said that he had not attended any classes since Tuesday. Ahlawat hailed from Rohtak and had joined the institute 20 days back.
