The couple was caught from the bank itself by a team of the Lajpat Nagar police station after the cashier detected their fraud. A case of cheating and forgery has been registered against the couple and after being presented in the court, they are now cooling their heels in Tihar jail.
The couple has been identified as Afroza, 19, and Mustaqim, 21. Both are residents of Hauz Rani area of Malviya Nagar. According to a senior police officer, Afroza is married and has a child while Mustaqim worked in a sari shop in Lajpat Nagar. They had plans to elope.
The cheque, the senior officer said, belonged to the owner of the sari shop and had been stolen by Mustaqim.
“The cheque had been issued in Afroza’s name and bore her signature. For verification, the bank cashier asked her to sign the cheque again. It was then that he detected discrepancy in the signatures and called up the account holder. The shop owner told him he had not issued any such cheque,” said the officer.
The cashier told the account holder to reach the bank and called the police. Afroza was held and at her instance, police arrested Mustaqim too.
