“This case is a glaring example that no woman is safe (in Delhi), whatever her age,” additional sessions judge Sanjeev Kumar said while sending Bhola Adivashi to jail for life.

“This conduct of the convict can create shockwaves in the thousands of other ladies passengers, whether they are safe in a city like Delhi to go alone while travelling by different modes of transport…” the judge said.

The incident took place on March 11, 2011, when the woman took a rickshaw to go to Rohini West Metro station to return home after visiting her sister. Adivashi took her to a secluded place and beat her up before sexually assaulting her.

The judge said Adivashi not only needed to be “punished” but the court is also required to send a message to all such persons, so that, it could deter them…”. The judge noted that even the age of the woman did not deter the Adivashi, who raped a helpless and old lady.

“The act of the convict is so ghastly and inhuman act that the same cannot be condoned and lighter sentence cannot be imposed,” the court said rejecting his plea for leniency.
