Man rapes, kills ‘motherly figure’ on New Year’s Eve

For a 60-year-old woman, celebrations proved fatal when her 45-year-old acquaintance allegedly raped and killed her after getting her drunk on New Year’s Eve.

The incident took place at Majnu ka Tila in north Delhi on Friday night when the accused, Achchey Lal, went to the victim's house. Lal was arrested on Saturday. According to the police, the accused knew the victim, who worked as a maid, because her husband used to work as a daily-wage worker for Lal.

They said they zeroed in on Lal after they found out that he was the last person seen at the place of incident. The police also found his mobile phone near the victim's body.

Lal, who tried to escape, allegedly confessed to the crime during questioning.

“Initially, he tried to mislead the police by saying she was a motherly figure. However he later broke down and admitted to have killed the woman after raping her,” said Rupinder Kumar, additional deputy commissioner of police (north).

According to the officer, Lal told the police that he got the victim drunk and asked for sexual favours.

“The accused frequented the house often. On December 31, he reached her house and sent her husband for some work. He and the deceased were alone. They both had alcohol and after that, Lal allegedly attacked her. When the victim tried to resist, he gagged her with a cloth that led to her death,” said Kumar.
