MCD elections: EC reserves 138 wards for women

Apart from Abbi, whose seat has been declared general, the affected leaders are Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta, MCD Leader of the House Subhash Arya (BJP), opposition leader Jai Kishan Sharma (Congress) and MCD health committee chairperson VK Monga (BJP).

Of the 272 wards, 138 have been reserved for women that include 24 seats for women belonging to the scheduled caste. In addition, 22 wards have been reserved for SCs, leaving 114 seats for general candidates.

Unhappy with this, some councillors have decided to get legal advice and challenge the selection of reserved seats in court. Sharma said the party is largely satisfied with the declaration of seats. “I don’t see any problem in seat reservation but nothing has been decided yet,” he said. Jhilmil, Nangal Rai, Karol Bagh, Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar and Punjabi Nagar have been reserved for women.
