MCD fines govt bodies for mosquito breeding

Government agencies are as guilty of spreading dengue as Delhi residents. The shocking fact came to light when Municipal Corporation of Delhi revealed it has issued 134 challans and two notices to several government agencies for enabling breeding of dengue-producing larva.

Called VIP challans, the challans have been issued to Delhi Jal Board, Public Works Department, Delhi Development Authority, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Delhi Transport Corporation among others. “We have issued challans to even our own Horticulture and Works department,” Mayor Prithviraj Sawhney told reporters on Wednesday.

Mosquito breeding was even detected at Town Hall premises, the civic body’s headquarters.

According to the data compiled by the civic body, it has issued challans to Sanjeevani Hospital in Jasola Vihar, Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital in Tahir Pur, in north-east Delhi) and IHBAS Hospital in Dilshad Garden. Notices have been sent to PWD for two locations, Indira Gandhi Stadium and Sadbhavana Park.

The civic body has already issued whopping 45,532 legal notices and 6,125 challans to residents across the city.
