Medical panel wants time to clear cases

A six-member panel of doctors that recently replaced the Medical Council of India (MCI) has sought more time from the health ministry to decide on recognition and other related issues with regard to 87 medical colleges.

A six-member panel of doctors that recently replaced the Medical Council of India (MCI) has sought more time from the health ministry to decide on recognition and other related issues with regard to 87 medical colleges.

The panel has asked for an extension till July 15. The earlier date was June 12.

The decision is pending on issues such as recognition of three medical colleges, renewal of 24 government and 37 private medical colleges and other issues related to 13 new government and 10 private medical colleges in the country.

The six-member panel headed by doctor S K Sarin was formed to replace the 76-year-old MCI, which had been facing allegations of corrupt practices.

Other members of the panel are Dr Ranjit Roy Chowdhary, Dr Sita Naik, Dr Gautam Sen, Dr Devi Shetty and Dr R L Salhan.
