MNS threat to Bachchans disturbing: Cong

The Congress described as "disturbing" the MNS threat to the Bachchan family and disturbance at the premier of Amitabh Bachchan-starrer movie The Last Lear.

The Congress on Wednesday described as "disturbing" the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena threat to the Bachchan family and disturbance at the premier of Amitabh Bachchan-starrer movie The Last Lear.

"This is disturbing.. I met the Congress President and apprised her of the developments in the state," said AICC General Secretary in-charge of Maharashtra Margaret Alva.

Alva said she has spoken to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh who has assured that steps have been taken and the situation is under control.

"This is an unfortunate development where language and state are being made an issue by certain political parties to divide Mumbai with an eye on the vote bank," Alva said.

She said Mumbai has always been the home for people from across the country. "Anyone who tries to destroy this ethos is destroying Mumbai," she said.

Asked if Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil has been asked to check the hooligans, Alva said he was from NCP and she cannot issue directions to him.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said the people of India in general and Maharashtra in particular must rise collectively to protect the ethos of the country.

Referring to the MNS threat, Singhvi said "such antics and tactics cut at the very root of multicultural, secular, multilingual India. Balkanisation of India is of scant concern to the fringe players who do not have any vision of a united India".
