MPs in poll mode, JPC puts spectrum probe on backburner

As many as 11 meetings, scheduled during these two months, are likely to be deferred. As the original schedule got jeopardised, there is serious doubt if the panel can complete its work within this year. "It seems by the time it is able to prepare its report and submit it, the JPC will lose all its relevance," said a member.

Initially, PC Chacko-led panel had planned 73 meetings to wrap up its report. Chacko had planned to hold at least six meetings every month. But on Thursday, many members, especially from BJP and Congress, wanted a break citing poll campaign in five states.

A member pointed out that several officials, including key bureaucrats from finance and telecom ministries and members of telecom regulatory authority are yet to appear before the panel. "There is also a strong possibility that officials from the companies involved in the 2G allocation may also be summoned," said a member.

Ironically, the opposition had stalled the entire winter session of 2010 demanding the JPC.

The Chacko-led panel also refused to look into the depositions already available with parliament's Public Accounts Committee that had already dealt with the subject. During the winter session too, the JPC failed to hold regular meetings.
