Notice to govt on bypolls

A Supreme Court bench on Thursday sought a response from the Centre and asked Attorney General GE Vahanvati to assist the court on the issue of pendency of election petitions as a ground for not holding bypolls in a parliamentry/assembly constituency.

A Supreme Court bench on Thursday sought a response from the Centre and asked Attorney General GE Vahanvati to assist the court on the issue of pendency of election petitions as a ground for not holding bypolls in a parliamentry/assembly constituency.

The Election Commission has challenged the June 30 order of the Andhra Pradesh HC directing it to hold by-polls in all 12 assembly seats falling vacant due to resignations of pro-Telangana MLAs.

The commission had notified by-polls only in 10 constituencies on July 27.
