The incident took place at around 1.30am on Thursday when 25-year-old Samsher Singh, working as a fitter at the construction site, fell from the roof.

Singh was employed with M/S Yongnam, a sub-contractor engaged in work on the roof of the under-construction Terminal 3 at IGI Airport.

“He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” said a spokesman of airport developer Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL).

The accident was followed by protests by other labourers who stopped work for the day.

“We have requested Larsen & Toubro — the main contractor for Terminal 3 works — to support the bereaved family and ensure that all safety measures on site are enhanced to prevent such incidents,” the DIAL spokesman added.

L&T refused to take calls despite repeated attempts.

The incident raises questions about the safety standards being followed at the construction site. About 26,000 labourers are building the airport’s new integrated terminal before the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

On January 9, three workers were killed and two seriously injured after they got trapped during excavation work at the construction site. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel had to be called in to rescue the workers.

Workers protesting the deaths damaged the site office and pelted stones at vehicles. About eight vehicles, including the ambulance carrying the workers, and two vehicles of the CISF were damaged.
