Pre-monsoon showers cool Delhi, rain to stay for a few days

Delhi experienced the season’s first pre-monsoon showers on Monday, providing respite from the sticky heat and bringing down pollution levels. The Met office has forecast rain and thunderstorm with squall on Tuesday when the Capital celebrates World Yoga Day.
The day temperature was down by as much as seven degrees after the showers. At 1:30 pm, the temperature had fallen from 38.4 to 31 degrees Celsius.
Traditionally the monsoon hits Delhi on June 29 but this time it is not clear yet if it would keep its date this year or get delayed.
“The southwest monsoon has advanced into remaining parts of central Arabian Sea, Konkan, Marathawada and Vidarbha, most parts of Madhya Maharashtra and some parts of southwest and east Madhya Pradesh,” PTI quoted the IMD as saying.
On Tuesday, the temperature is expected to hover around 37 and 30 degrees Celsius.
“The skies will generally remain cloudy with rain and thunderstorm likely at many places with squall likely at one or two places,” said an IMD official.
The Met office has forecast rain till Thursday when the temperature is expected to hover around 38-40 degrees Celsius.
The rain brought down pollution levels. At the Mandir Marg and RK Puram stations, the Air Quality Index (AQI) remained satisfactory. At Anand Vihar, which usually has high concentration of pollutants, the AQI was moderate. It was same at the Punjabi Bagh station as well.
The maximum temperature settled at 38.6 degrees Celsius, average for the season. The minimum temperature was recorded at 30.5 degrees Celsius, two notches above average.
The city recorded 10.1 mm of rainfall till 5:30 pm. The rain, however, left the day humid. The humidity level wavered between a high and low of 98 and 49%.
It’s been a cruel summer for Delhi — and the rest of north India — with the Met last month issuing a red alert amid warnings of an intense heat wave.
The Palam weather station, usually the hottest part of the city, had recorded a high of 47°C in May.
