"The BJP President called up Badal and expressed concern over the violence in Punjab. The two leaders exchanged notes on the issue and the steps being taken to handle the situation," a source close to Rajnath told PTI.

Badal, who is head of Shiromani Akali Dal, is an ally of the BJP-led NDA.

Violence erupted in Jalandhar and spread to other parts of Punjab after the death of the Dera leader in Vienna became public. Army and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in the state and curfew imposed to control the situation.
