An alleged goof up by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has landed 26,000 of its staff in a soup.
An alleged goof up by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has landed 26,000 of its staff in a soup.

Most sanitation workers — daily wagers and substitutes — have not been given their salary for this month and some for two months.
Malook Chand Beniwaal, founder and spokesperson of municipal Safai Kaamgaar Congress, “The daily wagers and substitute workers were earlier told that they would be made part of the biometric system at a later stage. Now, the Municipal Commissioner has issued directions that no one will be paid any salary if they are not part of the biometric system. This is not fair.”
“We were never opposed to the biometric system. It is the MCD that did not start registering the daily wagers and substitute workers. Why should we suffer because of their inefficiency?”
The workers have threatened to go on a mass strike if they are not paid their salary by the end of the month.
However, the civic agency has denied the allegation.
“A number of sanitation workers didn't register, which is why their salary has not been released,” said Deep Mathur, director press and information, MCD.
He added that those who have not registered could still do so as the registration process is still on.
“We want them to co-operate with us and make this system a success,” he said.
The civic body recently set up a committee to find out about its ‘missing’ 22,853 employees. The committee is still verifying a number of bank accounts of its employees to find out the ‘missing’ staff.
