The rains might have brought in a welcome relief for Delhiites but the roads in the city have given in to the monsoon mayhem.

As many as two roads in the city caved in West and Central Delhi. In Karol Bagh, D B Gupta Road caved in and in central Delhi, Maharishi Raman Marg near Khan Market caved in. With these two cases, nine roads have caved in in the past 72 hours.

“A road near Khan Market had developed a small pothole during the rains. When the NDMC staff went to fill it up, the road caved in further and developed a five feet deep crater. A barrel dating to the British era runs below the road and that must have caused the road cave in. The road has now been filled up,” said a senior NDMC official.

In DB Gupta Road, a tempo’s rear wheel got stuck in the crater that formed on the road. “As per preliminary investigation it seems that the road caved in because of settling of a water pipeline. Also, it is being suspected that bandicoots must have made the road hollow by nibbling away the soil.

Not only the dense surface but the soil, which is the first layer, has also worn off. We have barricaded the road and repair work is being carried out. The road has been cordoned off and traffic movement has been restricted on it,” said a senior MCD official.

On Saturday, five roads in the city caved in.

The cave ins were reported from Saket, Aurobindo Marg, Greater Kailash II, and BRT Corridor at Moolchand.
