The Supreme Court on Monday referred to a larger bench, the award passed by the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal on the sharing of the river water amongst the southern states.

A Bench of Justice S B Sinha and Justice Markandey Katju also issued notices to the Centre and the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry to file the response on the issue.

The Bench passed the order on a batch of petitions complaining that the Tribunal's award was arbitrary and discriminatory.
