SC stays probe into Ishrat Jahan case

The Supreme Court today stayed investigations into the Ishrat Jahan encounter case after IPS officer GL Singhal, filed a petition in the apex court seeking reconstitution of the SIT team that was investigating the case.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed investigations into the Ishrat Jahan encounter case after IPS officer GL Singhal, filed a petition in the apex court seeking reconstitution of the SIT team that was investigating the case.

The Gujarat High Court-appointed SIT has just one member Inspector General of Police Satish Verma left now. At the time of its composition, SIT had senior IPS officers Karnail Singh, Mohan Jha and Verma.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vadodara GL Singhal was part of the police team that gunned down Ishrat and along with three men - Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar - on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004.

Ahmedabad police had accused the four of being Lashkar-e-Toiba members and that they were plotting to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
