Doctors in her village in Dariyapur had warned her she could lose her life if any surgical intervention was made on the tumour.

Last Wednesday, ENT specialists at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) removed the tumour and relieved her of the excruciating pain arising out of sheer size of the non-malignant growth and the ‘social alienation,’ she suffered all her adulthood.

“The tumour was made of solid tissue. It was the largest parotid gland tumour I ever came across in medical literature.. We conducted the cosmetic surgery to remove it from the face,” said Dr K.K, Handa from the ENT department at AIIMS. The tumour weighing 1.8 kilograms was located on face and neck of the patient but it was not fatal.

Lakhmani, a resident of Dariyapur in Jharkhand had lived a quiet solitary life as she did not attend any social function or move out because of her condition.
