Shobhit death: Vigil by family
The family of slain engineering student Shobhit Modi is now planning a public campaign to seek justice for the deceased.
They have sought permission to hold a candlelight vigil in central Delhi on Saturday evening and even begun an SMS campaign to garner support.
They see this course of action as their last hope in the absence of a breakthrough in investigation by the police, who haven’t found a clue in the case even after seven weeks of probe.
"Shobhit was brutally murdered near his own home in early May. One and a half months later, the police have still not made any headway in spite of claiming to have got a number of leads," Suraj Modi, Shobhit's father, told Hindustan Times.
"We are holding a candlelight vigil to demand a CBI inquiry into the matter. We can't allow the murderers to go free — if only to make our cities safe for our own children," he added.
The family has decided to formally break its silence and interact with the media for the first time since Shobhit, 20, staggered to his Vasant Kunj residence with four stab wounds in his chest and back on the night of May 5.
Meanwhile, sources claim to have unearthed "a long chain of persons" through whom "someone close to Shobhit" had hired goons to threaten him at his college, Manav Rachna University in Faridabad.
"The case is certainly not on the backburner and is being investigated very thoroughly and is reviewed at very senior levels almost on a regular basis. It is taking a bit more time in being cracked because empirical clues have been hard to come by. However, in earnest, no stone is being left unturned," said Amulya Patnaik, joint commissioner of police (southern range).
Investigators say at least eight teams including the south district's anti-auto theft squad (AATS), in addition to four others belonging to the crime branch, are working on the case.
"Almost the entire small-time criminal community" active in the Vasant Kunj area had been profiled, the police said.
Investigators also said more than 500 people had been questioned in relation to the case so far.
Most suspects, especially from Shobhit's circle of friends, are being repeatedly questioned.
