Monsoon gained strength in parts of northern and eastern India on Sunday even as six persons, four in Uttar Pradesh and two in Kolkata, were killed in rain-related incidents.

In UP, two persons each were killed in Barabanki and Azamgarh districts in separate incidents of wall collapse, officials said. Major rivers in the state, including the Ghaghra and the Sharda, continued to breach the danger mark.

Fafamau (Allahabad) recorded 68 mm rain, Ballia 52.6 mm and Uska Bazar (Siddharth Nagar) 84.4 mm, the local met office said.

In Kolkata, a woman, 35, was electrocuted after she came in contact with a galvanised wire at Entally, while another person was killed at Debpukur in Titagarh in North 24-Parganas district when a tree fell on him during a downpour, police said.

The eastern metropolis recorded a total rainfall of 41.5 mm in the past 24 hours.

In Madhya Pradesh, three persons including two children were swept away while crossing a flooded bridge on Mandla-Kanha road, police said. The incident occurred when a 55-year-old man tried to cross the bridge with his nieces on his shoulders, police added.

In Jammu, three people including two sadhus trapped in a flash-flood in river Tawi were rescued. Police said rescue operations were continuing to save four others caught in flash-floods at Raipur-Satwari area.
