SMS updates resume after 13-day hiatus

The Delhi traffic police resumed its traffic update messaging system from Tuesday, providing relief to about 60,000 registered users of the service.

The SMS service that was launched on July 16 was put on hold for 13 days. From Tuesday, however, the service has a special feature called CWG-2010, keeping in mind the ongoing sporting event in the city.

“We started sending traffic updates from Tuesday morning immediately after the ban on bulk SMS was lifted. The ban was imposed on September 22 as a measure to check any organised propaganda on the Ayodhya verdict,” said Ajay Chadha, Special CP (Traffic).

With the service back in place again, motorists can now get information about the traffic blocks and the Games-specific traffic restrictions, in addition to the regular update on general traffic conditions in the city.

“The SMS service would be of great help, especially at a time when we are enforcing restrictions on vehicular movements on the dedicated Games lanes. We expect, it would be easier to manage traffic on the dedicated lanes henceforth. Every day, people will be updated about the roads which are dedicated for the use of games related traffic,” Chadha said.

A dedicated team of traffic police personnel were put in place to provide regular updates to the registered users.
