South Delhi MCD to rope in Phogat sisters as brand ambassadors

After the success of the Aamir Khan starrer ‘Dangal’, which was loosely based on the story of wrestlers Geeta and Babita Phogat, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to rope in the sisters as brand ambassadors to promote the concept of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Apart from the Phogat sisters, the civic agency will appoint one Paralympic player as a brand ambassador to highlight its achievements. The SDMC will use their photographs for print and outdoor campaigns and their voices in audio clips to be aired on radio channels.
“Their photos will be placed on the official website of SDMC,” said a senior SDMC official. The proposal was approved by the standing committee on Thursday. The administrative approval will be given on Friday.
“The sisters symbolise women empowerment and inviting a paralympic player will help us to get associated with social cause,” said Shailendra Singh, standing committee chairman.
New headquarters
The south corporation’s headquarters will be built on nine acres of land located behind Pragati Maidan at Indraprastha Estate.
The SDMC standing committee on Thursday cleared the layout plan. The building plan will be approved soon and the building is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2018.
SDMC commissioner Puneet Goel said, “The SDMC will engage NBCC to construct the headquarters. The same agency is constructing the exhibition-cum-convention centre at Pragati Maidan.”
Presently, the north and south corporations operate from the 28-storey Civic Centre. The North Corporation, which claims to be the owner of the Civic Centre, has been demanding a rent of R 864 cr from the South Corporation for using the building since 2012.
“The construction of SDMC’s headquarters will end the dispute as SDMC will shift most of its offices to this place,” said Singh.
