Subhash is on the run and several police teams have been formed to arrest him. Police said they were close to nabbing him.

The incident was reported to the police by Sakshi’s neighbour Bhisam Singh. She was rushed to the Safdurjung Hospital in a PCR van, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Sakshi’s father Pritam Singh, who is a contractual plumber at JNU, has alleged that Subhash had been threatening to kill Sakshi and himself after his marriage proposals were constantly rejected by the family.

“My daughter’s murder is a conspiracy. It was hatched by my brother’s family members with whom we have a dispute over property. Subhash had been stalking my daughter and wanted to marry her. Since he is our distant relative, my daughter used to talk to him occasionally. Five months ago, we turned down his marriage proposal. I do not know if he visited her in my absence,” he said.

Police, however, said she was murdered for refusing to marry Subhash despite being in touch with him for five years. A police officer said the two liked each other and would meet often whenever her parents were at work.

“Subhash had bought her a phone. After her father found out about the two, he seized the phone. She, however, used to talk to him in secret through another phone,” the officer said.

On Friday morning, Sakshi was in her bedroom when Subhash allegedly walked into the house with a country-made gun. Her parents were away at work while her aunt and her daughter-in-law were in another room.

“Their conversation soon turned into an argument, but the aunt and daughter-in-law did not interfere. A few minutes later, Subhash pumped a bullet into Sakshi’s chest and fled,” said the senior officer.
