Traffic cops to double deployment for smooth run of odd-even scheme

Over 2,000 Delhi Traffic police personnel — double the strength than a regular day, along with officials from local police stations, will man the roads during the 15-day odd-even restrictions between January 1 and 15.
“We are deploying all our resources for making the oddeven rule a successful initiative. We would also like to appeal to the citizens of Delhi to cooperate with our officials so that we can avoid unnecessary traffic jams and make the city’s environment clean,” said Muktesh Chander, special commissioner of police (traffic).
The traffic unit of the Capital’s police department has an overall strength of 6,000 officials of which 1000 are deployed on a regular day. However, during important days and for managing heavy VIP movement, a maximum of 2,000 officials are pressed into service.
The traffic police will also be assisted by a team of local police, who have been asked to keep a check in their respective jurisdictions with PCR vans.
Around 250 additional officials will also be stationed at the borders of the city to ensure that the entry into the city from other states is restricted. There are 106 entry points to Delhi, of which only 32 are manned on a regular day.
“The idea is to regulate traffic at the entry points itself. A major chunk of the city’s vehicular population is because of these vehicles from neighbouring states,” said a senior traffic official.
Section 115 of the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) will also be invoked during the period, which gives the traffic police the power to restrict entry of vehicles into the city. To avoid traffic snarls by motorists engaging in arguments with cops to escape challans will also be dealt with seriously.
On several busy stretches, where the traffic moves at a fast pace, barricades will be put up to monitor violations, the official said.
