An accident followed.

By Saturday, the two had become patients in Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.

Mehzabeen’s both legs have been damaged while Kumar has had to part with his right foot.

The two were hurled to the tracks and run over by a train on Friday night. Their families blame the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation for the mishap.

Mehzabeen’s uncle Sohail Khan said, “We want compensation as they (Delhi metro) didn't take precautions to ensure such incidents don’t take place.”

“We were on our way to a relative's place at Chandini Chowk when it happened,” said Ayesha Begum (48), Mehzabeen's mother, who is a resident of Dehradun. This was her first visit to the capital.

“The man started pushing his way through the jam-packed platform to enter the train even before it had stopped and pushed her to the tracks,” she said.

Birju had come to Delhi in search of a job and was staying in Jahangirpuri.

“His parents have been informed and his mother is on her way from Mumbai,” a police officer said.

Dr. T.S. Sidhu, Medical Superintendent, RML Hospital, said, “Both patients are yet to give their statements to the police.”

He said Mehzabeen was shifted to a private facility so her damaged limb could be replaced with a prosthetic one.

“Birju’s right foot that had to be amputated will be replaced and artificial limbs will be attached to Mehzabeen’s damaged feet,” a hospital source said.

A case of negligence has been registered against unknown persons at Rajiv Chowk metro station, police said.
