The television journalist was shot dead while she was returning to her Vasant Kunj home in the wee hours of September 30.

The letter, which the vigilance department received a few days back, said the sender had witnessed two men, one of them apparently wearing a turban, on a Yamaha motorcycle fighting with a young woman in a white Maruti car on Nelson Mandela Road on the night of September 30. The incident happened around the same time when Vishwanathan was killed.

The sender also noted down the motorcycle’s registration, which was from Punjab. The letter also said the two men might be between 35 and 40 years.

“The registration number stated in the letter was traced to a village near Phagwara in Punjab. We immediately dispatched a team. There we found that the owner of the motorcycle had sold it some time back,” a senior police officer said.

The owner had apparently sold the bike to a Gurgaon resident. But when the police reached the address, they found it locked. “We also got the cellphone number of the new owner of the motorcycle, but the phone number is be out of service,” police said.

The police are certain this person might be involved and could also be the prime suspect. The cellphone’s call records prove the person was at Nelson Mandela Marg around the time Vishwanathan was killed.

“We checked the cellphone tower records. This cellphone was active during the time when Vishwanathan was murdered,” the officer added.

The police are now looking for this man. This lead strengthens the police’s theory that drunk men might be involved in the murder. “We are using our network to zero-in on this person. We hope that we will catch him soon. This lead might help us in cracking the case and nabbing Vishwanathan’s murderers,” the officer said.
