Winter chill is on the wane in the capital with the mercury rising much above the normal level in the last few days.

The minimum temperature on Monday was recorded at 12.9 degrees Celsius, about six degrees above the normal minimum temperature at this point of the season, Met department said.

The maximum temperature yesterday was recorded at 24.8 degrees Celsius, which is four degrees above the normal maximum temperature. Yesterday's minimum was 13 degrees.

The mercury was at a minimum of 11.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The normal minimum temperature at this point of the season is seven degrees.

However, dense fog engulfed the capital this morning, reducing the visibility to 200 metres. Normal flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport was disrupted because of the fog. Over 30 domestic and international flights were delayed and six others cancelled.

The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 21 degrees Celsius tomorrow while the minimum may remain around 10 degrees, the weatherman said.

January this year has been warmer so far as compared to last year when the minimum dropped below five degrees a number of times. The season's lowest temperature was recorded on January 2 when the minimum dipped to four degrees.
