CAREER TALK|Art Restoration

I have heard a lot about art-restoration. I would like to pursue this as a full-time career. Do I need to specialise in any given period of art? What is the scope of art-restoration in our country?

Restorers and conservators of art work with museums, the archeological survey of India, the Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural heritage or even as free lancers. Both practical and theoretical training is required for the job.

A background in chemistry is useful to be able to diagnose the causes of damage or deterioration of art objects and to decide on the appropriate treatment.

A degree in fine arts would give you the skills needed while courses in history of art and museology can also be useful. An MA in conservation is offered by the Institute of History of Art, Conservation and Museology at the National Museum New Delhi. INTACH also runs courses in art restoration from time to time.

I would like to be a wedding planner. Is there any course I need to finish? I have been arranging birthday parties for friends and family. How can I start off a business of my own in this field?
Priyanka
Experience, ideas and organisational skills counts for much more in this field than any training programme.

I suggest you start by joining an event management company that is handling weddings to get as much experience as you can.

Once you are confident of being able to handle such events on your own you can launch your own venture.
