The Modi juggernaut appeared unstoppable as the BJP led in 305 of Uttar Pradesh’s 403-seat assembly. Early counting showed the party’s vote share in UP to be more than 40% (the BJP got 42% votes in Lok Sabha elections in 2014). Analyses of the data indicated that the BJP not only held on to its traditional support base but expanded its appeal among a cross section of castes and sub-castes that traditionally voted for the Samajwadi Party and the BSP.
