Assam Assembly Election 2021 Schedule

In the second phase, elections will be held in 39 seats on April 1 and the rest 40 seats will go to the polls on April 6, in the last phase. The contest in the state is between incumbent BJP, which has finalised seat-sharing with local Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Congress. Congress has formed an alliance with AIUDF, led by Badruddin Ajmal, Anchalik Gana Morcha and three Left parties.

Assam election 2021 voting will take place in accordance with Covid-19 protocols. To ensure social distancing, there will be a total of 33,530 polling stations, which is a 34.71 per cent increase in the number of polling stations. The Assam Assembly election results will be declared on May 2, along with the results of Kerala, Puducherry, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

In the Assam election 2016, the BJP won 60 of the 84 seats it contested, the AGP won 14 of the 24 it contested and the UPPL did not win any seat. Congress, which had been in power in the state for three straight terms under the leadership of Tarun Gogoi won 26 seats out of 122 it contested. Tarun Gogoi passed away in November 2020 after battling with post-Covid complications. In Tarun Gogoi's absence, Congress is relying on his son Gaurav Gogoi, who is helming the party's 'Assam Bachao' campaign, but he is unlikely to be a contender for the CM post.

In the Assam election 2021, the BJP will be contesting in 92 seats out of 126 seats, AGP will be contesting from 26 seats and UPPL will be contesting from eight seats. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will be contesting from his seat Majuli while finance minister and BJP's key strategist in the north-east, Himanta Biswa Sarna will be contesting from his current seat Jalukbari.
