Following this, he became deputy CM in a government led by JDU's Nitish Kumar. However, his tenure was cut short when Nitish Kumar broke the alliance with the RJD and Congress, and rejoined the NDA in July 2017, leading to Tejashwi Yadav's resignation.
In the 2020 Bihar assembly elections, Tejashwi Yadav was the leader of of the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) that had the Congress as the other prominent member. While the alliance won 110 out of 243 seats — with the RJD emerging as the single largest party with 75 seats — they fell short of the 122 seats required to form a government. Nitish Kumar returned as NDA CM. Tejashwi Yadav became the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar assembly. His political fortunes shifted again on in 2022, when he was sworn in as deputy CM for a second time, after Nitish Kumar once again severed ties with the NDA and formed a government with the Mahagathbandhan. His term as deputy CM ended in 2024 when Nitish Kumar returned to the NDA, leaving Tejashwi Yadav to take on the role of opposition leader again. Tejashwi Yadav, a son of former Bihar CMs Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, has emerged as a significant political figure and a strong voice for the opposition.
