Kerala election 2021 voting will take place under strict Covid-19 protocol. Announcing the Kerala election 2021 schedule, the ECI increased the number of polling booths from 21,498 to 40,771 so that adequate social distancing protocols can be followed. The Kerala assembly election results 2021 will be declared on May 2, along with other states. The previous assembly elections in Kerala took place on May 16, 2016.

The tenure of the 14th Kerala legislative assembly will come to an end on June 1, 2021. A total of 2.67 crore voters will elect the Kerala assembly election 2021 candidates for the 15th legislative assembly.

Kerala is among the states worst affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. It reported the first case of the infection in the country in January last year. A few months after that, the number started decreasing, but in recent weeks, the state is again reporting a surge in the daily caseload.

Kerala is currently ruled by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M). The LDF also includes the Communist Party of India (CPI), Kerala Congress (M), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Janata Dal (Secular), Indian National League and various other regional parties.

In the 2016 elections, the LDF won 91 of the 140 Kerala assembly seats.

The BJP is trying hard to dethrone the LDF and form the next government in Kerala. It has inducted E Sreedharan, the engineer credited with giving Delhi the metro train network. Sreedharan is widely hailed as the 'Metro Man' and the BJP expects that his word will benefit the party in the election campaign.

It is also facing challenge from the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) which has ruled Kerala alternatively along with LDF.
