For months ahead of the polls, Congress battled anti-incumbency and internal strife with Congress state chief and the chief minister not being on the same page. What started between Navjot Sidhu and Amarinder Singh continued between Sidhu and Charanjit Singh Channi as well, after Channi replaced Amarinder Singh. However, Congress put up a united face after Channi was declared the CM candidate. The Shiromani Akali Dal contested the election with the Bahujan Samaj Party. BJP tied up with Amarinder Singh's Punjab Lok Congress and SAD (Sanyukt) led by SS Dhindsa.

Jeevan Jyot Kaur who defeated Sidhu said that Punjab has overcome identity politics. Thanking the voters for giving AAP and the "tried and tested Delhi model" of Arvind Kejriwal a chance, she said, "It's the victory of the people of Punjab. My ticket was announced around Dec 30 ...Got positive indication during door-to-door campaigns that Punjab has overcome identity politics."
What worked for AAP in Punjab
The party encashed on people’s disillusionment with traditional outfits, sought a chance to bring about a change as AAP accused its rivals of looting the state.
The party’s slogan "ik mauka Bhagwant Mann te Kejriwal nu" (one chance to Bhagwant Mann and Kejriwal) seems to have clicked among voters.
The party sought to replicate the Delhi model of governance in Punjab by improving the condition of schools and health facilities.
AAP also promised freebies like ₹1,000 per month for women, free power up to 300 units and round the clock electricity to woo voters.
The announcement of Bhagwant Mann as the CM face before the polls also worked to its advantage. (PTI)
People's victory, says AAP's Gurmeet Singh Khudian who defeated SAD patron Parkash Singh Badal
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Gurmeet Singh Khudian, who defeated Shiromani Akali Dal patron Parkash Singh Badal from the Lambi seat, said that from the first day onwards, people walked along with him and supported him.
AAP's Khudian won with a formidable margin of 11,396 votes. Khudian won the Lambi constituency by bagging total votes of 66,313 while Badal finished at second position with 54,917 votes.
"It is people's victory. Youth has brought a new Inquilab. From the first day onwards, people walked along with me and supported me," said Khudian. (ANI)

AAP greenhorn makes Channi bite the dust in Bhadaur
AAP candidate from Bhadaur Assembly seat Labh Singh Ugoke on Thursday defeated his Congress rival and Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi by a comprehensive margin of 37,558 votes.
Ugoke, 35, comes from a humble background. His father is a driver, his mother works as a sweeper and he ran a mobile repair shop before he joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a volunteer in 2013.

Prominent winners included AAP's chief ministerial face Bhagwant Mann from Dhuri, Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema from Dirba, Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Kumar Sharma from Pathankot, Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa from Qadian and minister Rana Gurjeet Singh from Kapurthala.

According to Election Commission data at 6 pm, AAP has won 89 seats and is leading on three more in the 117-member assembly. The ruling Congress has won 15 seats and is leading on three more. The SAD-BSP combine has been able to win only four seats and BJP two in the contest in the state which was being seen as multi-cornered. Independents also won one seat.

As Aam Aadmi Party poises for a historic verdict in the state, Bhagwant Mann, MP from Sangrur and party's CM face, said on Thursday that he will take the oath as Punjab's Chief Minister in Bhagat Singh's village Khatkarkalan, and not at the Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh. From comedian to CM: Journey of Bhagwant Mann
Born in Satoj village of Sangrur in 1973, Mann started his career as a comedian. He began his political career in 2011 with the Punjab Peoples Party, which is led by Manpreet Singh Badal. In 2012, he fought the elections from the Lehragaga constituency but lost.
Later, he joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2014 and contested the election from the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat. His importance in Punjab politics increased when he defeated the veteran leader of Punjab Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who was then with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Mann has been elected to the Punjab Lok Sabha seat of Sangrur for two terms in a row since 2014.
He gained popularity from his satires in TV show 'Jugnu Mast Mast'. He also featured in several other comedy shows.
