Buddhist monks from all over India, Nepal and Tibet are in the city today to celebrate the occasion of Buddha Poornima or Buddha Jayanti. It was on this day that the three most important events of Buddha’s life took place — his birth, his enlightenment and his death (nirvana).
It is also for the first time that the day is falling on the same as per the Hindi and the Tibetan calendar, making it allthemore auspicious. “More than 500 lamas will be present to seek the blessings of the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje who will be in Delhi for the first time,” says Derek Hanger, spokesperson, South Asia Buddhist Association. The event is at the Karmapa International Buddhist Institute.
“Anyone wanting to discover Buddhism can come,” says Hanger. As prasad, 'blessed pills' (said to have spiritual powers) will be handed over to a few lucky believers. The puja begins at 11am with the beating of drums.
