'I'm addicted to music of all kinds'
Akbar Sami's albums Jalwa 1 and 2 sold more than a million copies each and now he is set to return with Jalwa ’09. In conversation with Veenu Singh.entertainment Updated: Apr 04, 2009 19:10 IST
Popularly known as the pioneer of Bollywood remixes, Akbar Sami had never thought of becoming a DJ, though he had an ear for music and rhythm and had even studied music. So he started off as a dance choreographer, but one day, the in-house DJ didn’t turn up and Akbar was asked to take over. He’s never looked back.
Akbar’s albums Jalwa 1 and 2 sold more than a million copies each and now he is set to return with Jalwa ’09. He’s also working on a Sufi album. After remixes of Aashiq Banaya and Ek Haseena Thi, Akbar will also be doing the music for a forthcoming film Fast Forward.
What are you reading?
Hahaha... Good question. I’m going to become a father in April so I’m reading all about new born babies and the dos and don’ts of the first few months and about fatherhood. Exciting stuff.
Fun to you is…
Getting out of Mumbai city with a few friends and spending the weekdays holidaying at different hill stations of India, as I work on weekends!
If you were invisible for a day, you would…
I would act like Robin Hood – help the needy and loot the greedy!
Your worst date ever?
None. All my dates have been superb. But I remember one blind date. This girl was the one I had been trying to avoid for nearly three months, and there I was having a candlelight dinner with the one I never wanted to date. It was sad.
What are you addicted to?
To music of all kinds, shopping, and great food.
Are you a morning person or night person?
I love it when the sun goes down. I go to the right spots in the city where I can see the sunset with my camera. I love the night.
Would you like to be young forever?
100 per cent. Dev saab rocks! Time doesn’t stop, we all become old but the age factor, as we all know, is in the heart.
The naughtiest thing you’ve ever done as an adult?
Hmmmm! I set a friend (who thought he was a lady killer) on a date in Bangkok and left a window open to peep in with all my other friends. Can’t explain how crazy and funny that scene was.
The one food you can never say no to?
The Hyderabadi dishes my Ma makes at home. Can’t get that flavour even in Hyderabad. It’s the best food in the whole world.
Your retirement dream?
What retirement? I believe in life, so wanna die young at 99.
The one fashion trend you just don’t understand?
The kind of fashion and clothes I see on models walking the ramp. Gosh, I’m yet to meet or see someone wearing them on the streets or at a party.
Your next move?
Is to make people move to my grooves all over the globe. Also working on two new projects, and opening a DJ institute, most wanted in our country.
Three people from history you’d like to meet?
mahatma gandhi, alexander the great and bob marley
Your favourite cartoon character and why?
Elmo. Cutest thing I have ever seen
A place you’d love to visit?
Ibiza, the party capital of the world. Heaven for DJs. would love to play there
