Many wanted to revisit their favourite hang out spots post the ease of restrictions after lockdown last year, or shop at their favourite store, or just meet good ol’ friends. But for singer Mamta Sharma, the thing that topped her list was devouring Dilli ki chaat!

The singer, known for hits such as Munni Badnaam Hui (Dabangg; 2010), Fevicol Se (Dabangg 2; 2012), says, “I missed the famous #DilliKiSardi but am still craving for Dilli ki chaat! That’s one main thing that I have missed in all these months... I am a foodie, so when the flight reopened, I was like ‘Yaar, Dilli chalte hain’. Kyunki chaat in Delhi is the best thing! Dilliwaale toh lucky hain hi, par India mein sabko pata hona chhaiye ki the best chaat is available in Delhi. My favourite is the one we get in Chandni Chowk, and I also go to Paranthe Wali Gali for the paranthas.”

Sharma, who was a frequent visitor to the Capital since her brother lives in Noida and maternal uncle lives in Delhi’s Mansarovar area, shares that she’s trying all possible ways to be back here the soonest possible. “Very soon I’ll be shooting a song in Chandigarh and going via Delhi. And I’m planning and hoping that I get to go to my favourite chaat shop this time,” adds Sharma, whose last performance in the Capital was in February 2020.

Like most musicians, Sharma, too is missing the energy of the stage and live audiences, and is occupied with making Independent and film music. “Shows aren’t the way it used to be. I love stage shows. Ho rahe hain shows par bahut hi kum, with precautions and masks on. It’s not full-fledged like it used to be earlier. The gigs that used to happen with lot of crowd... missing those gigs. I’m hoping Covid goes away soon, and I get to perform on the stage here... Delhi audience is my favourite; they are the best! They enjoy so much, and love all sorts of music,” she adds.

“I’m not an outdoor person at all, and Iove to be at home. But (during the pandemic) I missed going out. I was so bored at home, like most of the people. However, I got the time to know more about me, be with my family, and work hard on the things I wanted to. I had all the time,” adds Sharma, who has come up with a new single, and travelling extensively to promote it, and looking forward to come to Delhi as well. “It’s risky. Jaise pehle kiya tha humne, waise kar bhi nahi paa rahe, due to Covid. Everything has changed so much. I feel scary, keeping distancing in mind, sanitising my hands every minute. One has to work. So, just taking the risk and keeping precautions in mind,”she says.

Talk about the music industry, and she’s quick to say that it’s easier for budding artists to penetrate Bollywood now as compared to 10-15 years ago. “New talent is getting easily recognised more. This is the best part. They can now showcase their talent on digital platforms and get recognised,” she concludes.
