Nikhil Taneja chats with Farhan Akhtar about his new venture Rock On and his future directorial venture Voice From the Sky.

How come you did playback singing for five songs in Rock On!!?
Actually, there are five songs written and sung by the band, which were a part of the script. So we stuck to that. (Director) Abhishek Kapoor was clear that whoever played the lead would sing those five tracks.

How did a rock tune from your film Lakshya become the title song for Rock On!!?
If I’m not mistaken, it was because of Ehsaan or Shankar. Ever since we recorded the music for Lakshya, we felt that the rock riff could have been used better. We’d often be asked why we didn’t include that riff on the Lakshya CD. So, when we were recording the title track for Rock On!!, that riff came up.

How come there aren’t too many Hindi singing rock bands here?
Maybe because lyric writers for rock bands are more comfortable in English. But there are bands in Delhi, which write their songs in Hindi. Rock buffs prefer international acts to Indian bands, which is a bit shameful actually because there are fabulous bands here. I think promoters lack perspective about how to tap a psychedelic crowd. But it’s just a matter of time now. Slowly but surely, rock is gaining popularity. Indian rock has come of age.

Did you listen to any Hindi rock bands before you started singing?
Not really. All the music that I’ve been listening to over the years was enough for me to learn.

So was it only Guns N’Roses for you?
Guns N’ Roses helped me go back to rock in the 1980s because pop had taken over me.

Do you see yourself doing more rock concerts after the movie?
I play the guitar in my spare time. I’m extremely passionate about it. I don’t know if I’ll pursue it in the future though.

And playback singing?
Not really. It works really well in the context of this film, which is why I agreed to do it.

Have you got any acting offers after the promos of Rock On!!?
To be honest, just two films have come my way. I have no intention of doing any film right now. I want to stay very focused on Voice From the Sky which I’m directing. Everything else is on hold.

Would you like to be remembered as an actor, director or a rock star?
(Laughs) Rockstar is a bit too out there. That’s being pompous after doing just one film on music. I’d always like to be remembered as a director first.
