Anjum Singh’s art can truly be called a reflection of life. For it is the routine experiences of daily life that find their way into her paintings and installations, on view at the Palette Art Gallery, Golf Links, till April 2.

And they could be as mundane as contaminated water that gave her a stomach infection recently, or the overwhelming presence of plastic in just about everything. “Like everybody else,” says Singh, “I’ve also been affected by the travails of living in a big city. And they naturally find their way into my works. The reactions are that of an ordinary person but the experience is personal.”

The last three years since she last had a solo show, says Singh, have been a learning experience. “You evolve as you grow older and your attitude to things changes. For instance, now I feel that creative satisfaction is more important than numbers. This is not to say that visibility does not count, but now I won’t show a work till I am truly satisfied myself.”

That, perhaps, explains why there are only six paintings and three installations in the present show. As for the future, Singh is working towards a show at Mumbai’s Sakshi Gallery next year. Once again it will be her interpretation of life in a big city. For, as she says, “There are no truths, only interpretations.”
