When South African designer and model Gabriella Demetriades moved to Mumbai, she converted an entire room in her Bandra apartment into a closet. The room is lined with open shelves and racks with designated sections bursting with jackets, jeans, dresses, bags and shoes, it’s like being behind-the-scenes at a fashion shoot. Dressed in vintage Dior trousers that once belonged to her mother and an Acne Studios top and minimal make-up.

Style sensibility: “My style is easy and comfortable. I stay away from structured and fitted cuts, and I am drawn to layering and oversized fits. I am an un-girly girl, and my hair is almost always undone. I spend most of my time in my gym clothes. I’m also big on sports luxe.”

Closet staples: “Capes, paper bag-waist tie pants, palazzos, leather jackets, jeans, and dresses with a touch of grunge are my go-tos. If I like something, I just get it in every colour — this is true of oversized capes from my label (Deme by Gabriella), my Nike sneakers, bags from Gucci and Chloé, and my Isabel Marant boots.”

Happy feet: “I don’t fancy heels as much as I do flats. I have Converse sneakers and Stan Smith shoes in several colours. Adidas’s Yeezy Boost sneakers are the latest addition to my collection. I’m obsessed with boots and have over 100 pairs, which I don’t shy away from wearing even in Mumbai. I think every girl needs a pair of Sergio Rossi thigh-high boots in her closet.”

Brand roster: “I am anti-logo, and prefer understated and niche brands. I am partial to a host of underexposed Australian labels like Zimmermann, Sass & Bide, OneTeaspoon, Dion Lee and Country Road. Other than that, I am also fond of Acne, Isabel Marant, Dries Van Noten, Rachel Zoe, Balenciaga, Alexander Wang, Chloé, Payal Singhal, Lovebirds, and Péro. I wear my own creations often too.”

Ace accessories: “I am big on jewellery. For daily wear, I prefer minimalistic and delicate jewellery that doesn’t shout for attention. For statement pieces, I turn to brands like Outhouse and Valliyan by Nitya Arora, or design some pieces myself.”

Shopping philosophy: “Quality and fabric are important to me. I am also drawn to vintage finds — Portobello Market in London, and flea markets in Cape Town promise great finds. I shop online too.”

Style influence: “My mother is the most stylish person I know, and my wardrobe is filled with hand-me-downs from her. She’s eclectic in her choices, and makes most of her clothes herself.”

When-in-doubt outfit: “Flat Isabel Marant boots, jeans and white tee will do the trick during the day. For a night out, I’d simply throw on a bodysuit with jeans and sexy boots.”

Never have I ever: “I am not a big fan of body-con dresses. I’m not trend-driven either. So while everyone is wearing off-shoulder tops with chokers, it’s something that I just can’t give my nod to.”
