Shehla Khan (designer to actors like Karisma Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, among others) is fresh from her workout. There’s a chain of bags filled with her belongings scattered across her sea-facing Bandra apartment — where she recently moved — waiting to be unpacked. Her wardrobe is overflowing with monochromatic shades and an abundance of lace fabric.

Fashion sensibilities: “For me, it’s a form of expression. Anything that’s forced on you, or something you cannot understand, would end up looking wrong on you. Whatever you wear should be something that you can interpret according to your sense of style.”

Closet staples: “For me, its a black blazer, a white shirt, a classic, timeless sari, a lehenga, and a lace dress. Also, a little black dress is my safety net. And, a string of pearls or diamonds.”

At home: “You’ll find me in pyjamas. I am obsessed with these Marks & Spencer nighties I own. My friends make fun of me; they say I look like a catholic maid in them, but I love them.”

Colour code: “I like wearing black, white and pastel colours. Eighty per cent of my wardrobe is black. I don’t like wearing bright colours because I think I have a pale complexion and I can’t carry off something so vibrant. The furthest I’ve gone is wearing a bright red dress.”

Brand love: “I love Top Shop. You’ll see me wearing it on a regular basis. From the high-end ones, I like Valentino and Dior. I have old pieces from John Galliano, which are my favourite. For accessories, it would be Chanel and for shoes, Roger Vivier, Tom Ford and Christian Louboutin.”

Bag it: “I still have my mom’s old Chanel bags. They’re very classy and in fact, better than the ones being designed right now. I’m more of a clutch person, so I like Sergio Rossi and the evening wears from Dior. I have an Alexander McQueen gold leaf clutch that I really like.”

Less is more: “Anything that is uncomfortably heavy and embellished. I don’t like anything that’s too flashy. I like being minimalistic.”

Fashion faux pas: “When I was younger, I used to go with any trend. I used to force myself to dress in a certain way just to prove that I followed fashion and be cool. Now when I look at my pictures, I think I looked quite silly, because I couldn’t carry off any of those outfits.”

Not so impulsive: “If I see something that I like, it will play on my mind until I don’t get it. I’m a very fickle-minded shopper. I’ll try a piece on for half an hour and probably come back again and then get it. One really needs to have patience if they’re shopping with me.”

Style icon: “Kareena Kapoor. She is always well dressed, even if she’s going for coffee. She takes the effort to dress up and still doesn’t go over the top. I also like Sonam Kapoor because she understands my fashion sense. She turns everything into a stunning look and I enjoy participating in that process.”

Lavish purchase: “I recently bought a black and white dress from David Koma. He’s my new favourite. I want everything from there but I can’t afford it. I literally scraped my bank account to get this dress for New Year’s Eve and it didn’t even reach on time. Now I don’t know where to wear it.”

Lace it: “I collect a lot of lace fabrics. If I have to go abroad and shop for fabrics, I’ll find the best places to get lace first. I think every girl should have a timeless lace dress.”

Shopping buddies: “I like shopping with people who share the same passion for clothes as I do. Growing up, Rhea Kapoor and I would shop like animals and we’d get fired by our mothers.”

Fetish: “I’m currently obsessing over leather and leopard print. I’ve been looking for a leopard print skirt for myself, but I haven’t been able to find one that flatters my body.”
