One would expect to see some sharply tailored suits at an Arjun Khanna preview. Instead, his flagship outlet at Colaba has hundreds of pieces of vintage eyewear, watches, luggage, typewriters, helmets and even motorcycles from the designer’s personal collection, on display. “Some of the pieces in the exhibit are for sale too,” says Khanna. “Everything’s from my personal collection, which I’ve been adding to for 20 years now.”

For Khanna, vintage or retro exemplifies quirkiness, as opposed to monetary value. “Most of these objects are one of a kind. They won’t be available anywhere else in the country. This is about the thrill of owning such a unique object,” he explains, adding that those who choose to buy them could use these objects as part of their interior décor as well.

Ask why he’d sell his beloved collection and the designer says, “I’ve collected so much now. It started with one watch and now I have 10.

I have 40-50 cameras, 200-250 retro ties and so many other things. Many are similar, so I thought of selling them.”

Khanna also plans to make his curios a part of his store’s furnishings. They’ll be spotted strewn around his boutiques from now on. Since the stores stock menswear, there will be items like cufflinks and lighters too.

View the collection till September 14 at Arjun Khanna’s flagship boutique in Colaba. Some of the pieces are on sale too. Prices start at Rs 2,500 approx.
