We’re hyperventilating a bit at how beautiful Deepika’s navy blue and white one-shoulder outfit looked. The actor, who won Hindustan Times India’s Most Stylish (female) award on Wednesday, managed to wear what is usually an overpowering print from head-to-toe: Gingham, a cotton fabric with a checkered pattern, usually in white and another colour.

Once reserved for table linens and picnic blankets, gingham is having a major fashion moment, and it’s thanks in part to designers who are incorporating the print into their collections. And with her latest outfit, stylish actor Deepika proved that the preppy checkered design is the print to wear right now.

Deepika’s Rosetta Getty wrap dress (from her Pre-Fall 2017 collection) was tailored yet playful with its flirty silhouette and kitschy pattern. She added one more trend to the mix by wearing blue jeans from Topshop, creating an unexpected preppy-polished look. Showcasing Deepika’s incredible physique, a matching tie-up belt highlighted her slender waist. And accentuating her stature, the actor added a pair of metallic Aquazzura pumps.

Deepika further accessorised with oversized statement earrings from Misho Designs, which gave her the perfect excuse to pull back her hair, tying it into a totally chic low ponytail. She showed off her enviably flawless complexion and natural beauty by keeping her make-up simple, choosing a bold red lip, eyeliner and mascara.

A quirky head-to-toe look like Deepika’s is tricky, so we recommend trying it in small doses. To figure out how to best tackle the gingham print in 2018, we went straight to the source: Instagram. Ahead are three chic ways to rock the trend for different occasions.

Wear it to work

For a subtle take on the trend, try a pair of black and white gingham pants. Pair them with a simple black top and pumps or loafers for a professional look.

Wear it to the beach

Throw on a pair of denim shorts over your gingham one-piece. Don’t forget to accessorise with a trendy pair of sunglasses and a cute bag to tote your stuff in.

Weekend wear

For a relaxed weekend look, try a navy and white off-the-shoulder gingham top and fitted white jeans. Make it chic with strappy heels.
