Dangerously shorn denims, symbolical of the grunge fashion movement of the late 80s, have made fans out of a bevy of Bollywood A-listers lately.
From celebs like Bipasha Basu and Priyanka Chopra to Abhay Deol and Ranbir Kapoor, everyone’s jumped on to the grunge bandwagon, in what some would describe as ‘mauled’ jeans.
“It was all about rebel glamour back in the 80s, and that’s exactly how it’s being worn now, though a little tamer with the trend just focused on denims. After all, hardcore grunge was all about literally being in tatters,” says designer Anand Kabra. “Two seasons ago it was faded, embellished rocker jeans and now it’s all about ruthlessly torn ones,” says stylist Pria Agni.
Fashion stores say everyone wants them. “People come and ask for fata hua jeans. Some even show pics of actors in them,” says Sachin, a shop owner at Sarojini Nagar Market. “I saw a lot of girls and boys wear torn jeans at the fests,” says DU student Deepti Vij.
