Now, I hear that it wasn’t just talks that happened across the table when the patching up exercise was happening between designers and organisers of fashion weeks. I hear that wads of currency were too offered from one party to another, so that two fashion weeks can become one!
Money always talks. But this time apparently it didn’t work. Why? Well, the party that was offered the money seems to think that “more money can possibly talk!” Absurd? You bet.
What I heard is that one section who was keen on joining hands offered a cash settlement to the tune of Rs 50 lakhs but the expectations of the other ran into much more than that… into several crores. So the parties parted ways and as you know, we still have a division in Delhi and two fashion weeks.
These are stuff that I heard from some of my friends who were privy to the talks that they had in the last few days. Can’t really figure out what the agenda really is here. One thing is for sure, whatever the agenda may be, it surely is not meant for the fashion design industry… it’s aimed more towards settling scores and personal benefits.
India’s fashion industry that till now was moving forward has reached this stage where money had to be put on table so that people can let go of their egos and work as one? How sad is that?
I think it’s about time that the people concerned left this ‘patching up’ efforts and moved ahead. Let’s not forget that an individual or two do not constitute an industry, nor do they matter if the rest want to move ahead and do something that is for the benefit of the industry.
I have always felt that it is not those who have been around for a long time who make this industry; it is those who have talent who need to make up their minds and leave all controversies behind and move forward. I guess we’ve all had our fair share of confusions, allegations and counter allegations.
If any one is truly serious about the fashion industry, then it’s about time that they concentrated on what they are doing and moved ahead with it. Last week, I called a designer and he told me that he was in the design room and working. He also said that he is no longer interested in this politics and patching up exercise. He seems to have made up his mind to let this confusion fly past him and concentrate on his designs that will take him forward in his life…
And he was damn right!
