From those who have evolved to gain the credibility of being called veterans, to the new, hot game changers — Indian fashion has acquired the ability to fluidly embrace a host of talent.
In its second edition now, Vogue Fashion Fund India provides a similar platform to fresh creativity, exemplified in the way of season one’s winner, designer Aneeth Arora.
Started by the US version of the magazine, the first judging round of the Indian chapter took place last week, with 19 semi-finalists showcasing their collection in Mumbai to the judges, FDCI president Sunil Sethi, retail experts Alka Nishar, Tina Tahiliani, Gaurav Mahajan, fashion designers Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Suneet Varma and the magazine’s team including editor Priya Tanna and Anaita Shroff Adajania, Bandana Tewari, Oona Dhabhar.
Designer Rahul Mishra, who was one of the finalists last year, is excited to be back this time. “In the past year, my label has seen a momentous growth of 200%. The fact that I’m back means that I’ve gained credibility with the fashion fraternity.”
Helming two labels, one would think that designer Masaba Gupta’s print-perfect garments would primarily make for savvy celeb spottings. But, she is also in the running for the coveted award. “It adds on to the learning process. As far as being established is concerned, I have a long way to go. Mentorship is what I’m looking for,” she says.
Delhi-based designer Ruchika Sachdeva looks at the award as a chance to have a newer insight into her label. “It’s great to reflect and get a fresh perspective on my work, and get a more critical window into it,” she says.
The top five designers will be chosen soon, and the winner who will be crowned in October will get a fashion shoot in the magazine, mentorship with an industry professional, cash prize, and more.
