Kareena Kapoor was a size zero. This girl is a size minus four! Ann, a 6’2” wannabe model with a shocking 22” waist, who came as a contestant on the US reality show America’s Next Top Model, has got the world asking the question: “How thin is too thin?”

On the show, supermodel and judge Tyra Banks — known for her ‘pro-curves’ stance with her famous retort ‘kiss my fat ass’ to those denouncing curves — shockingly praised Ann, who claims to have the thinnest waist in the world. About the girl, who has a waist so tiny that co-judge J Alexander could touch his hands while wrapped around it, Banks said, “There’s something about her (Ann) I like.”

Almost immediately, outrage by the fashion community, bloggers and fans ensued. Women’s website Twirlit said Ann should not have been allowed on the show. “The person should not be rewarded for their size but encouraged to get help,” the site said. Tyra was also accused of doing it as a publicity stunt for the show, and even though she apologised later, the damage was already done.

Meanwhile, desi models, all shorter than Ann, still have a bigger waist than she does. “This girl is excessively thin,” says model Sonalika Sahay, who is 5’10” tall and has a 26” waist. “Models do things that don’t always go well with the doctors,” reasons Donna Masih, who at 5’8”, has a 25” waist. Model Sapna Kumar, who is 5’9” with a 25” waist, says, “She must be genetically thin”.

Doctors, too, warn against such an ‘unhealthy’ body type. “The waist of anyone whose height is 6’2” should not be less than 24 inches,” says Dr Meenakshi Jain of Max Hospital.
