FIFA World Cup 2018: ‘Sheep, not GOAT’ – Twitter trolls Lionel Messi after loss against Croatia
Lionel Messi got off only one shot in the entire match as Argentina were defeated by Croatia in their FIFA World Cup 2018 encounter in Nizhny Novgorod on Thursday.football Updated: Jun 22, 2018 09:54 IST
It was a horrible outing for Lionel Messi & Co as Argentina were completely outplayed by Croatia in their FIFA World Cup 2018 group stage encounter in Nizhny Novgorod on Thursday.
With Diego Maradona watching from the stands, the 2014 runners-up were routed by Croatia 3-0 and now, they need to win their next match against Nigeria on Tuesday, as well as get help from other matches to qualify for the knock-out stages.
Argentina, who struggled to find their rhythm against a composed Croatia attack, have not lost by such a large margin in the first round since a 6-1 defeat to Czechoslovakia in 1958.
Ante Rebic capitalised on a mistake from Argentina keeper Willy Caballero to open the scoring and Luka Modric doubled it with a brilliant long-range strike. Argentina tried to fight back, but a late goal from Ivan Rakitic was enough to seal the game for Croatia.
It was also a bad outing for Argentina’s star footballer – Lionel Messi – as he got off only one shot in a defeat that pushed Argentina to the brink of elimination. The FC Barcelona star missed a penalty during Argentina’s first group stage match against Iceland and on Friday, he once again failed to influence the game from the midfield.
Messi, who turns 31 on Sunday, has never won a major title with Argentina despite winning five Player of the Year awards and it seems that the trophy draught will continue for the Argentine talisman.
Twitter users were not happy with Lionel Messi’s performance and they made their feelings clear on the social media. A lot of users proclaimed that Cristiano Ronaldo has beaten Messi to the title of GOAT (Greatest of All time) while others sympathised with the Argentine superstar. Here’s a look at some of the tweets –
Messi is no goat. Perhaps, he's a sheep. But definitely not THE GOAT. pic.twitter.com/SQM1yK7qTx— Efo Kojoyevu (@kojoyevu) June 21, 2018

The anti-Messi clan in full swing. One of the realities of an extremely successful career is that any failings or shortcomings are amplified to high heavens.— JJ. Omojuwa (@Omojuwa) June 21, 2018
