The intelligence had detected about 160 operational mobile phones in the jail, immediately after which two raids were conducted on July 30 and August 2. Besides 11 mobile sets, nine phone batteries, six functional SIM cards and two phone chargers were also recovered.

“Last week we had informed the jail authorities that about 160 mobile phones were operational on the jail premises. After this, they conducted search operations in the jail and recovered some phones and SIM cards,” Gurgaon police commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk, said.

In August 2014, the Haryana government had added an amendment to the Haryana Prisons Act 1894 to control smuggling in prison, but nothing has changed.

As per the amendment, using communication devices on the jail premises was prohibited and anyone possessing the device could get up to three years of additional jail term.
