In a major boost for the anti-polythene drive in the Millennium City, The management of all the malls in Gurgaon had set a December 31 deadline to switch to paper/jute/recyclable bags.
The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) commissioner Vijay Singh Dahiya met with representatives of more than 25 malls in the city who assured the chief of strict adherence to the drive.
"I really appreciate their commitment and wish that the city becomes completely polythene free in the New Year," said Dahiya on whose appeal the Ambience Mall management had first come forward on November 29 to work towards a deadline.
Mall officials said they will put up banners in and around malls to make shoppers and shop owners aware of the campaign. "We hope shop owners and shoppers cooperate," said JK Gupta, senior manager, Sahara Mall located along the MG Road.
"We will hold a meeting with all shop owners at our mall to make sure the campaign is successful by December-end," said PS Puri, manager, MGF Metropolitan Mall.
"The assurance by malls to the MCG commissioner is a big step forward. If executed, the city would become a model for others," said a senior official of the Haryana state pollution control board (HSPCB), which has been taking steps to stop usage of polythene bags but not achieved much success.
The commissioner also visited Sadar Bazaar, one of Gurgaon's oldest markets, where he found rampant usage of polythene bags on Tuesday.
On November 30, a group of residents led by Ratan Singh, president of the Joint Action Forum of Residents' Association (Jafra), had assured the Commissioner of support in making the campaign successful.
Dahiya is set to replicate the Panipat example where he had made a popular mall 100% polythene-free in 2008-10. He had issued letters on November 26, the second day in office as the MCG commissioner, to all malls, shopping centres, RWAs and others.
